Ideas for Ear Infections

Author: Romdu Churko

Sweet Almond Tree

Essential oils, when used for ear infections, should be rubbed around the outside of the ear and down the side of the neck. Treat both ears even if only one hurts. Chances are the other ear may becoming infected as well.  And continue to treat both ears several days after the pain disappears to make sure the problem does not reoccur.

Lavender, tea tree, garlic, and chamomile oils can be used for ear infections. Do  not put drops of essential oils into the ear.

For a simple formula:

(Lavender and tea tree oil are antiseptic oils).
For children use only 4 drops of the essential oils

For infants use only 2 drops of the essential oils.

Synthetic Oils vs. Natural Essential Oils

Harmony Body Cream

Some pointers on detecting synthetic oils:

  • They don’t smell the same. No matter how hard chemist try to duplicate nature they always fall short.
  • They don’t work the same. Check the results.
  • Synthetics can cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes, headaches, sneezing, and possibly puffy eyes.
  • Synthetics don’t smell like the real thing. Chemists often add some of the real oil to the cheaper synthetic oil to come close to the smell of the real essential oil. Or they may substitute a chemically derived compound that smells like the real thing.

Aromatherapists do not use synthetics in aromatherapy products!

Aromatherapy and the Amazing Molecules of Aroma

Author: Romdu Churko

Cypress French ( cupressus sempervirens)

Essential oils have many components or many tiny aromatic molecules. These molecules are detected by our sense of smell and we recognize each aroma as being distinct and unique from another aroma. However, some plants smell similar to each other or have a recognizable characteristic. For example, lemon peel, lemon eucalyptus, melissa, and lemongrass all have the lemon aroma. But these plants still smell distinctly different because their essential oils contain other compounds that are different from the lemon aroma. The wonders of nature has given us over 30,000 distinct aromatic compounds, each contributing to it’s own aroma and therapeutic, healing property. And then nature rearranges these aromatic compounds in many different ways to give us new fragrances. Amazing!

When we combine various essential oils in bath blends or massage blends we can increase the therapeutic qualities of the individual oils, (synergy blends).

Under Your Skin?

Body and Bath Oil

Try this experiment: Cut a clove of garlic in half and rub the cut side on the sole of your foot, put your socks on and wait for about 20 minutes. What do you notice? You should notice the taste of the garlic in your mouth. Twenty minutes is approximately the amount of time for the garlic to be absorbed through the skin in the soles of your feet and then transported through the body via the blood stream. Now, garlic is known to have an antiseptic action and this is what will be working in your body when it is becomes absdorbed through the soles of your feet.

Essential oils work the same way. When an essential oil is massaged into the body it is absorbed through the skin and goes to work on the part of the body that needs assistance. It makes sense that if a sore muscle is being massaged with essential oils the muscle will be the first to benefit form the essential oil molecules.

Not all of the essential oil molecules will be absorbed through the skin. Some will evaporate from the heat of the skin and some molecules will stay on the surface to work as a moisturizer and surface healer for the skin.

It is important to note that when carrier oils such as sweet almond oil are added to the essential oils the absorbtion of the molecules into the skin is slowed down (20 t0 40  min.) due to the fact that the carrier oils have larger molecules that will stay on the surface of the skin and hold on to some of the essential oil molecules. The benefit in this case is that the essential oils can do their work on the skin. Aromatherapy products such as facial cream, body cream and massage oils work in this way.

Are you sick and tired of skin problems that stay with you?

Skin conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis and  eczema that manifest as inflamed, red, itchy and flaking skin can be treated with skin healing and anti-inflamatory essential oils in aromatherapy products. Some very qualified essential oils are lavender, chamomile, tea tree, melissa and neroli.

How do you do it? Try a ready made store-bought dermatitis salve with calendula and comfrey (2 oz. jar). Add 10 drops of tea tree oil, 8 drops lavender oil, and 5 drops chamomile oil and mix. Put it directly on the skin 2 or 3 times a day. Now you have an aromatherapy product that should work to help heal the skin condition.

Essential Oils are Also Called Volatile Oils

Author: Romdu Churko

 benzoin-pourable.jpg

Benzoin Pourable

A plant gets it’s scent from the essential oil that it contains. So, if a plant has a scent, it has an essential oil. We extract the oils in several ways.  Once it is extracted it is slightly oily to the touch and much thinner than vegetable oils used for cooking such as corn oil or olive oil. The oil seems to disappear when rubbed between the fingers and evaporates quickly into the air. Because of this volatility essential oils are also known as volatile oils.

Why do plants have these oils? Botanists believe that the role of these oils is to attract bees and other pollinting insects, to repel harmful insects, repel other plants that may crowd the space, to kill bacterial, fungal and viral infections, help to heal plants wounds and increase immunity to disease.

Aromatherapy Blends for Bath and/or Massage.

Sweet Almond Tree

Essential oils smell great of their own but when they are blended, the oils  have a greater effect than when alone. “Synergistic blending”, as it is called, is defined as the “combination of oils is more powerful than the sum of it’s parts”.

A wonderful benefit of blended oils is that you can use the blend for several uses. Relax and enjoy an aromatherapy blend in the bath or with a massage.  Do you have sore muscles or joints? Try an anti-inflamatory blend of lemon, lavender, ginger and juniper. Make sure to use  a good quality carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil mixed with the essential oils. Essential oils are too concentrated to put directly on the skin.

Tea Tree (Malaleuca alternifolia)

Those itchy, rash like bumps on your skin called hives are often caused by a food allergy. They can be frightening, embarassing and annoying. There are aromatherapy remedies such as a skin wash, compress, poultice or a cool bath with essential oils added that are helpful. The essential oils that work well are Lavender and Chamomile.

A simple formula: (from “Aromatherapy for Dummies - Kathi Keville“)

  • 10 drops chamomile oil
  • 3 drops peppermint oil
  • 3 tablespoons baking soda.
  • 1/2 cup water

Compress: Soak a cloth in the above solution and apply on the affected area. Reapply every 10 min. or until itching is relieved

Poultice: (add 3 or 4 tbls. of oats to the above solution) Stir the oats into the solution and let thicken. Then apply the paste to the affected area and leave on for about 20 min. Then wash the paste off.

Bath: add 5 drops lavender one 2 drops peppermint oil and one cup of ground oatmeal to cool bath water and soak in it.
